Brand Positioning for Local Businesses: The 3-Word Test
- Positioning is a subtraction game: you win by saying less, not more.
- If your positioning fits every competitor, it positions nothing.
- Owners can't self-diagnose positioning — you need outside language.
- Positioning changes copy, ads, hiring and pricing. It's not just a tagline.
The 3-word test
Ask 5 recent customers: "In 3 words, how would you describe us?" Write down the exact words. Overlap = your real positioning. If every answer is different, you have no position — you're a commodity.
Sharpen with the substitution test
Take your homepage headline and swap in your top 3 competitors' names. If the sentence still works, it says nothing. Rewrite until only you could claim it.
Pick one enemy
Great positioning defines who you're NOT for. "Premium not cheap." "Boutique not corporate." "Fast not perfectionist." The enemy makes the position sharp.
Anchor the position in one visible proof
Same-day service. 500 five-star reviews. 25 years in one town. Family-owned. Pick the one that's true and put it everywhere — website hero, GBP description, ad copy, email signature.
Pressure-test with staff and referral partners
Your team should be able to say the positioning without rehearsing. If they can't, customers won't either.
Then — and only then — build the marketing
Positioning first, then social media plan, then ads, then SEO. Marketing before positioning just amplifies confusion.
