The 2026 Local SEO Checklist for Service Businesses
- Google Business Profile is the single highest-leverage SEO asset for a local business.
- Consistent Name-Address-Phone (NAP) across the web is non-negotiable.
- Service pages should target one service + one city each, not everything at once.
- Reviews are ranking signals — build a system, don't hope for them.
1. Google Business Profile foundation (steps 1–8)
Claim your profile, verify ownership, and lock in the fundamentals. Pick a primary category that matches your money service — not a generic one. Add every relevant secondary category. Write a keyword-rich (but human) description, list your service areas, and set accurate hours including holidays.
- Claim & verify Google Business Profile
- Pick the most specific primary category
- Add up to 9 secondary categories
- Fill every "Services" and "Products" field with keyword-rich descriptions
- Add 20+ real photos (exterior, interior, team, work)
- Post a weekly Google Post (offer, update, event)
- Enable messaging and set an away-message auto-reply
- Add attributes (women-owned, wheelchair accessible, etc.)
We break each of these down in our Google Business Profile optimization guide.
2. On-page SEO for service pages (steps 9–15)
One service + one city per page. That's the rule. A page titled "Services" that lists ten offerings will rank for nothing. Instead build focused pages like "Website Design in [Your City]".
- Unique H1 with the primary keyword
- Title tag under 60 characters, description under 160
- Include city + service in the first 100 words
- Embed a Google Map of your service area
- Add LocalBusiness schema markup
- Link to related services and blog posts internally
- Include a call-to-action every 2 screens
Our website design service builds every service page to this standard by default.
3. Citations & reviews (steps 16–20)
Citations are third-party mentions of your business Name, Address and Phone. They validate your existence to Google. Reviews validate your quality.
- Submit to the top 20 local directories (Yelp, BBB, Apple Maps, Bing Places, etc.)
- Audit and fix inconsistent NAP data everywhere
- Set up an automated review-request text after every job
- Respond to 100% of reviews within 48 hours
- Aim for 5+ new reviews per month, minimum
Citations are only part of your off-site footprint. For earning genuine editorial mentions from local organizations, suppliers and publications, see our guide to backlinks and link building for local businesses.
4. Technical & content SEO (steps 21–25)
- Core Web Vitals in the green (LCP under 2.5s, CLS under 0.1)
- Mobile-first design that passes Google's mobile-friendly test
- HTTPS everywhere, redirects clean, no crawl errors
- XML sitemap submitted in Google Search Console
- Publish one high-intent blog post per month targeting a local keyword

Frequently asked questions
How long does local SEO take to work?
Google Business Profile changes can move you within 2–4 weeks. On-page and citation work compounds over 3–6 months. Competitive markets can take 6–12 months to fully rank.
Do I need a separate page for each city I serve?
Yes, if you want to rank there. One thin page listing 10 cities will not rank. A focused page for each priority city, with unique content, will.
How many reviews do I need?
Match or beat your top 3 map-pack competitors — both in count and average rating. A steady flow of new reviews matters more than the total.
