10 Website Design Choices That Double Conversion Rates

7 min read
A pretty website that doesn't convert is just an expensive brochure. These ten design decisions consistently double (or better) the call-and-form conversion rate on the sites we build at Gravity Content Agency.
Key takeaways
  • The first screen decides whether visitors stay or bounce — treat it like a landing page.
  • Speed is a conversion feature: every extra second cuts conversions by ~7%.
  • Trust signals near every CTA beat trust signals stuffed at the bottom of the page.
  • Shorter forms convert better — but only if you still qualify leads.

1. A one-sentence value prop above the fold

In the first 3 seconds a visitor should know what you do, who it's for and what to do next. Not a hero image of a smiling stranger. A sentence and a button.

2. One primary CTA per page — repeated

Every page should have one action you want a visitor to take. Repeat it every 2 screens of scroll. Don't dilute with "learn more, sign up, watch video, follow us, download" all at once.

3. Trust signals near the CTA, not in a footer

Reviews, logos, ratings, awards — put them next to the button, where the buying decision actually happens. A 5-star rating strip under a form doubles conversion in almost every A/B test we've run.

4. Speed as a feature (Core Web Vitals in the green)

LCP under 2.5s. CLS under 0.1. INP under 200ms. Every 1-second delay costs roughly 7% of conversions. Compressed images, deferred scripts, edge hosting.

5. Mobile-first layout, not mobile-shrunk

70% of local searches happen on phones. Design the mobile view first: sticky call button in the header, thumb-reachable CTAs, and forms that autofill.

6. Short, qualifying forms

Ask for the minimum to book the call: name, phone, and one qualifying question. Every extra field cuts submissions by roughly 4–8%.

7. Real photos, real people

Stock photography is a trust killer. Invest in one shoot with your team, your workspace and your actual work — see our content creation service for how we plan this in a day.

8. Clear pricing (or a clear range)

"Get a quote" scares off 30% of qualified buyers. Even a starting price ("projects from $2,500") lets visitors self-qualify and improves lead quality.

9. A single service per page (for SEO and conversion)

A page focused on one service converts better and ranks better than a page listing everything. See our local SEO checklist for the SEO half of this equation.

10. Analytics before design

You can't improve what you don't measure. Set up GA4, call tracking, form tracking and a heatmap tool before you launch — not after.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good conversion rate for a service business website?

2–5% is average. 6–10% is great. Above 10% and you're likely getting warm traffic (referrals, brand searches) — which is a good problem to have.

Do I need a redesign or just a few tweaks?

If your Core Web Vitals are failing, your mobile experience is poor, or your CTAs are unclear, tweaks won't be enough. If those are fine, focus on copy and trust signals first.

How long does a conversion-focused site take to build?

A focused 6–10 page site takes us 3–5 weeks including copy, photography and analytics setup.
